Doggy Days out in Somerset

Here at Retreat, we’re proud to say that we are a dog-friendly caravan park and love it when families visit with their furry friends. Luckily, the county of Somerset has some fantastic days out of which you are welcome to bring your dogs along too. We’ve put together some of our favourite doggy day outings you can visit on your holidays.

Somerset is renowned for its beautiful countryside walks, many of which are along the coast- perfect for those who love the sea and wonderful for dogs, too. Walks are also a great way to ensure you’re not spending too much on your holiday day trips. There are also some fantastic pubs that allow dogs into the bar area and even have some tasty treats available to keep them entertained.

Cheddar Gorge is a particularly well known and stunning attraction that can’t be missed when visiting Somerset. It’s the biggest gorge within the UK and features dramatic cliffs that rise 450ft from the ground, not to mention the seriously stunning caverns. Dogs are welcome throughout Cheddar Gorge, including the cliff top walks, though it’s important they are kept on a lead and follow The Countryside Code for safety reasons! Dogs are also welcome to explore the caves and the museum, so it really is an exciting day out for the entire family.

If you’re a fan of wine, Somerset’s Oatley Vineyard proves to be a great day out. Visitors are welcome to walk the vineyard and taste the wines completely free of charge, and are also able to bring a picnic with them if they wish. Oatley Vineyard are happy for dogs to be walked around the vineyard, nature area and beyond. The best part is that wines can be purchased from the vineyard, meaning you’ll have a souvenir to bring back to Retreat to accompany your caravan dinner that evening.

For those who are interested in history, Glastonbury Abbey allows visitors to discover the interesting past, legends and spirit of Somerset. The abbey itself is simply beautiful, and visitors are able to view the resting place of King Arthur himself. When the sun is out, it becomes the perfect place for a family picnic and dogs are welcome too, so even a simple trip to allow dogs to stretch their legs in new surroundings! There’s also a museum and a gift shop, so it’s great for adults and children who are looking to learn a bit more about their holiday destination.

We love finding out about new and fun places around Somerset, especially when they’re dog-friendly. If you’ve visited anywhere recently, please let us know by tweeting us @RetreatBurnham!
